Illern - Purpose and Target Groups

What is the purpose of the text? What does the author want to achieve by it? Does he want to inform, provoke or persuade?

Once you figure out the purpose of the author’s intentions, it can be easier to judge the material. If the author wants to persuade it is good to be conscious of this, because you can establish what the author chooses to present and how they present it.

To whom is the text aimed? Researchers, school students or the public?

There is a difference between the target group adaptations for popular science and other works. This means that the author will assume the reader is familiar with the technical language used. It is important to choose material that is aimed towards you and your information needs.

Tip!
In scientific works the texts are produced by researches and there is always a list references, often at the end of the work.
