Illern - Information Search

How do I go about searching for information in the most effective way?

On the basis of the course’s general framework, it is recommended to go through it when you have a specific example that you require help with. Focus on the subject you would like to find information about. The exercises also give examples for those of you who do not have a specific problem to solve.

To succeed in your search for information, you first of all need a description of the subject you are interested in. The description is needed in order to choose a search strategy, which information sources you require and can use and which tools you will need to use in order to find these sources. Finally, you must be able to evaluate the results that you get in order to see which are of use to you. By training with this method of searching for information, you will notice that the road to the final information source is simplified and the results will be better.

The first step is to describe your question. To get a good result, it is important to think about what sort of information you need and how you will structure your question. On the following pages, you will get advice on how the description of a subject and the formulation of a search question can be made.
