Illern - Defining Your Question

It is important that you start by carefully thinking through why you are searching for information and what your needs are.

There are different ways of gaining knowledge about a subject; a common way is to discuss the subject as much as possible with a teacher, a course-mate or others. This can be done through discussion lists, looking through encyclopaedias, dictionaries and other similar resources.

At this stage, it can be valuable to think about which language you want the information in. Think freely and write down what you think of; you might want to do this in a so-called ‘mind-map’. An example that we are going to use in this course is: What did the emigration from Sweden look like?
