Illern - An Introduction

The online course Illern has been created as a part of the services offered by the Net University at Lund University. The main purpose of this course is to create an understanding on how to find different types of information.

The more you learn about different types of information, where you can find the sources that you need and how to handle them, the higher your information literacy will be. This term encompasses the ability to identify the need for information, critically evaluate and creatively use information, to have knowledge about sources of information and information systems, the ability to localise such systems, different techniques to search for information and the ability to use these skills and techniques.

The course contains text and exercises dealing with principles that can apply to your specific question. Therefore, it contains only a few simple databases so that you can use this approach the next time you need to search for new information in new databases and information sources. We have tried to give as many examples as possible.

Turn to the next page using the blue line on the top of the right hand corner of each page. A click on the arrow to the right will take you to the first section of the course. The course is divided into three sections, (Strategies, Tools and Evaluation), that are presented in the headings to the right of the page. The entire course will take approximately an hour to complete.
